Artistic Director Jean Grand-Maître brings worlds near, far and magical to the stage in our 17/18 season!

See the deserts of America’s Southwest region come to life in spectacular fashion with Momix’s Opus Cactus. Re-live the magic of Cinderella with Choreographer Christopher Anderson. Sink into the dark opulence of 17th-century court intrigue in the passionately engrossing Dangerous Liaisons. And next May, at the much-anticipated world premiere, explore with Grand-Maitre the ethos of Canada’s most-beloved band, The Tragically Hip, in a poignant contemporary ballet.

"We are thrilled to be part of this series of wonderful ballet portraits set to the music of some of the greatest musicians of our time. We are excited to see how our music will be interpreted through the vision of a renowned dance company.” – The Tragically Hip

“This season, I’m honored for the chance to create a unique portrait to the music of one of Canada’s most beloved group of artists. I look forward to this journey and to exploring the music and the poetry of such profound humanists.” - Artistic Director Jean Grand-Maitre

A new family ballet! Inspired by Charles Perrault’s 1697 version — and complete with all of its delightful elements: the magical Fairy Godmother, the hilarious Stepsisters, and of course a handsome Prince — Cinderella is the story of a heroine empowered by a persevering optimistic spirit ... and a special pair of shoes. Come be swept away in this fairy tale’s timeless dream.

All of Us (The Tragically Hip Ballet)

May 11–12

Following in the tradition of his other signature portrait ballets celebrating Joni Mitchell, k.d. lang, Elton John, Sarah McLachlan and Gordon Lightfoot, Jean Grand-Maître will now explore and inhabit the ethos of The Tragically Hip. Inspired by a soundtrack of the Hip’s most-loved music, this contemporary ballet celebrates the sound and stories of a band that has spoken so poignantly to a generation of Canadians.

Paquita & Other Works

(Subcription add-on) This season, the School of Alberta Ballet’s Professional Division performs Paquita: the story of a Spanish gypsy who saves the life of a French aristocrat, Lucien, before learning her own past isn’t want it seems. The performance will also include the Grand Défilé — beautiful selections that showcase the talent and dedication of the School’s Professional Division students from as young as 12 years old through to the School’s Professional Graduate students.

An incredible season awaits!
